FASCINATING GRANNY
breve historia de la vida de Mama, para un trabajo que hizo Sofi en el colegio.
-Hello, today I’m going to talk about my grandmother. My Grandmother is a very interesting person who has lived a fascinating life, and has a huge impact on my life. And I love her very much.
-Granny, as we all call her, was born in a town called Louisville, Kentucky, (in the United States) on March 3rd 1942 - 66 years ago. Her parents were not from Kentucky but her father was working there at the time in an oil field.
-Granny’s real name is Alta, which was her grandmother’s name and means “elevated” in Latin; but everybody knows her as Muffy, a name her brothers gave her when she was a baby. She had 2 brothers, Michael and Peter and one sister, Pammy.
-Granny didn’t live long in Kentucky. Her parents divorced when she was 6 and her mother moved her and her brothers and sister to Switzerland. Granny’s mother was a very pretty lady and soon she was remarried to a Swiss man. They lived in Switzerland for 2 years, and then they moved to France for another 2. During this time Granny discovered her love of skiing.
-Granny’s mother (who’s still alive at 93 and living in France) went on to marry three more times. So she had five husbands in all! And they were each from a different country. So Granny lived most of her childhood and teenage years in boarding schools around the world.
-After France, Granny’s mother married an Egyptian, and off they all went to live in Egypt. Granny was 11. She would ride the dessert in camels and make friends with Bedouins (nomads that live in tents in the dessert). At the age of 12 she already smoked cigars and pipes, and went around with a pistol in her pocket for protection in the dessert.
-At the age of 13 Granny moved to England where she went to a famous boarding school called -Hathrope Castle, where the Queen of England studied.
-By the time Granny was 15, her mother had married her 4th husband, this time, an Italian. So off they went to live in Florence, Italy, where Granny went to yet another fine boarding school called Poggio Imperiale and discovered her passion for opera, ballet and art.
-By this time Granny’s father, Spelman, had also remarried. First to a beautiful lady called, Lola with whom he had a son called Rocky, whom Granny loved very much but who died at the age of 20. Lola also died (of cancer) and so Granny’s father remarried for the last time to Mimi, to whom he was still married after 30 years, when he died six years ago.
-When Granny was 17 her mother moved them to Paris. This is where Granny met my grandfather. They met at a party in the Uruguayan embassy of Paris, because my grandfather is from Uruguay and he was visiting the ambassador at the time. Granny was 18 and my grandfather (Willy, but we call him Tata) was 32.
-Granny fell in love immediately and after only three days SHE asked HIM to marry her. Six months later they were getting married in New York. Once they were married they moved to Buenos Aires, where Granny soon learnt Spanish, although to this day she does not speak it very well.
-Granny and Tata were married for twenty years and had four children. Two were born in Uruguay and two were born in the United States. My mother was born in California. She is the youngest, she now is 32 years old and her eldest sister is 47.
-Granny has always loved sports. She started skiing when she was 6 years old and almost became a ski instructor. She has swum from the coast to the Gorriti Island in Punta Del Este. ----She has won many important marathons and has tried almost every sport.
As a result of her international childhood, Granny speaks four languages fluently and scattered sentences in at least three other languages.
-She has many fascinating stories. She has gone hunting with the Maharajah of Jaipur; has had dinner with Prince Philip, the Queen of England’s husband; has escaped from Arab soldiers in Egypt; she has been to Russia during the communist years, visited with the Armenian Archbishop in Armenia, has met and enchanted famous movie stars from all around the world and many, many other stories.
-She is a very special, out-of-the-ordinary person, and I have never met anyone quite like her. She believes in ghosts and witches and swears she has seen them… She believes in God but not in religion, or the bible…She will always say what she thinks even if people laugh at her or get angry…She thinks numbers have colors and she thinks she’s had seven lives before this one but that this is her last one!
-My Granny always makes me laugh and having her around is like having my own personal fantasy fairy tale teller all the time!
